Individuals with diabetic neuropathy and peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremities know the pain, discomfort and sensations that these conditions can cause. Neuropathy is a condition that occurs because of nerve damage that may be a result of damage to the nerves due to diabetes, autoimmune diseases, exposure to toxins, trauma or even inherited conditions.

There are some important steps that you can take to help manage the pain and discomfort of neuropathy in your feet and lower legs. It is critical to avoid repetitive exercises when you are experiencing the symptoms of neuropathy as this will only continue to trigger the nerve’s response.

Key things to consider for foot health over the thanksgiving holiday include:

• Wearing thick socks that are cotton and that fit loosely to your feet. Choose shoes that are comfortable and not restrictive or tight for walking around. Remember fashion is less important than foot health and comfort.
• Monitor your blood sugars and choose foods that will not cause your blood sugar levels to spike if you have diabetes. These spikes are often accompanied by increased risk of diabetic neuropathy symptoms.
• Don’t forget to exercise. Low impact exercises such as walking are considered a natural way to help reduce the pain of the condition plus you will feel more energetic for your busy days.
• Drink water instead of alcoholic beverages. Water, herbal teas or even a nice warm cup of hot apple cider is a better option and less likely to trigger neuropathic symptoms.
• Sit with your feet flat on the floor and avoid crossing your legs. Crossing your legs or sitting with your legs tucked up under you will increase pressure on the nerves in your lower legs and through the feet and increase the likelihood that you will have neuropathic pain, tingling and discomfort.

Being aware of foot health issues and enjoying Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping is a great gift to give to yourself. Make sure you also check your feet regularly and treat any blisters, sores or areas of irritation as soon as they are noted.
