Dr Anthony Weinert, a Michigan foot specialist and recognized authority as well as leading expert on foot health and wellness practicing in both Warren and Troy, Michigan talks about painful cracked feet during winter months.

crackedfeetWinter is hard on your skin as the dry air is very unforgiving and tends to draw moisture out of our bodies, but particularly the thicker skin on our feet and heels. This can result in flaky skin or, even more problematic, cracks that develop in the heels and even on the bottom of the feet. These cracks can become very painful, they can bleed, and they can become infected.

The Causes

The most common cause of cracks to the skin of the feet is internal dehydration. Even in the winter you should be drinking at least 8 full glasses of water per day on top of other liquids you may consume. Water, in natural form, will help to keep the
skin cells from drying out.

Cold weather may also cause you to be more likely to take long, hot showers or baths. Soaking your feet in hot water, as with the rest of your body, will actually draw moisture out, so avoid those long soaks in hot and try a warm, but not hot, bath with a moisturizing oil.

If you have dry feet using any type of products in the bath or shower that are designed to dry out the skin, including acne medications or some types of shampoos or body washes, can leave your feet standing in products that are harmful to the skin.

Treating Heel or Foot Fissures and Cracks

It is important to increase water consumption, avoid drying products and prolonged hot baths and showers, and to start to moisturize your feet with a good quality foot moisturizer. You can use this in the morning and at night to keep the skin supple and free from cracks.

Good nutrition, including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables also helps to boost the vitamins and trace minerals to the skin cells as well as aid in overall health.

See Your Podiatrist

When heel fissures bleed or become infected it is essential to see your podiatrist. This is particularly true if you have diabetes or a history of foot problems. Your doctor will recommend not only a treatment regime for the current issues but can also help you in developing a preventative plan to use during the cold weather season.
