Dr Anthony Weinert, a Michigan foot specialist and recognized authority as well as leading expert on foot health and wellness practicing in both Warren and Troy, Michigan talks about tips for runners during the winter time.

runinwinterAvid runners and joggers know that neither rain nor sleet nor snow can stop them from their daily fitness routine. However, those that are jogging, running or even walking outdoors for exercise in the slippery season need to take special precautions to avoid common issues such as twisted or sprained ankles and foot injuries due to slipping on icy patches.

Ideally run only on well-maintained running trails or sidewalks. Avoid running on the side of the road where it is not only dangerous but more likely to have ice buildup under accumulated snow. You should also make sure that you choose a running vest or jacket, hat, leggings or tights that are not only warm and wick moisture away from the body but that also have reflective tape to make you even more visible in the longer dusk and dawn hours.

Shoes and Socks Make a Difference

It is important to keep your feet warm and dry on a run when you are out in the cold weather. Choose a moisture wicking sock and, in extreme cold, consider adding an outer sock that is wool or a wool/cotton blend for warmth. With wet snow conditions you may want to add a pair of gaiters, which will keep your lower legs dry and allow snow to simply slide down over the shoes rather than going into the space between your running shoes and socks. There are also some winter running shoes that have a much higher ankle that literally is a gaiter with the shoe, which is a great idea for those that are avid outdoor runners.

Winter Shoes for Winter Wear

Choose a running shoe that is designed for winter wear. These are breathable yet water-resistant and can be used in the spring and fall weather as well. Look also for shoes with a moderate grip and good support for the ankles. Orthotics that keep your feet in the correct position in your shoes can also help with preventing ankle and foot injuries even if you do slip.

Last, but not least, if you run in areas where there are constant temperature changes and lots of risk of ice you may want to invest in running straps. These are like tire chains for your shoes, adding additional traction without adding a lot of weight or bulk to your shoes.
