I wanted to talk about a common condition that I see a lot in my practice especially amongst runners and athletes. Achilles tendonitis is a painful condition and the inflammation can often be debilitating. The Achilles tendon is the heel cord and it is the largest and strongest tendon that we have in our bodies. You will find it off your heel running up the back of your lower leg. Most of us are aware that the Achilles tendon can be torn, which is a very serious and painful injury, but most of us are not aware that there is a condition called Achilles tendonitis, that can become chronic.

3 stages occur when the Achilles tendon is inflamed.

  1. Peritenonitis – During this stage there is localized pain that occurs during or after activity. As the condition gets worse, the pain will often increase and intensify.
  2. Tendinosis – This is a degenerative condition that generally doesn’t have a lot of symptoms. However, you might experience a hard knot at the back of your leg or some swelling.
  3. Peritenonitis with tendinosis – During the third stage, you will experience pain and swelling with activity. As it progresses, you have the potential to rupture the tendon.

There are no actual stats on Achilles tendonitis but it is believed that 6% to 18% of runners and athletes deal with this. It also occurs in people that do a great deal of walking. The Achilles tendon can occur as a result of having arthritis in the heel, and so you often see the condition in middle age.

If you suspect that something is going on with your Achilles tendon because of pain and/or swelling you need to make an appointment with a podiatrist who will examine you and determine what is going on. You can then get treatment early so that you do not find yourself dealing with a chronic injury that interferes with your lifestyle. Feel free to visit my website at for more information on achilles tendonitis. While on my website you can request a FREE copy of my book “Stop Feet Pain Fast – A Users Guide to Foot & Ankle Health” which will answer all your questions you have on your foot and ankle health.
