michigan bunion surgery

Guess who’s feet were caught showing bunions? Scroll down for the answer!

A bunion is a boney prominence near the base of the big toe joint, often causing a substantial amount of pain and discomfort as they progress.   Surgery is the most effective way to correct the problem, and nullifies the debilitating pain that often comes with advanced cases.  However, people generally put off bunion surgery until the bunions are so bad that they simply must take action- and the question remains, why?

Unfortunately, there are a number of myths surrounding bunion surgery. Below, we explore some of the most common myths and why they shouldn’t be scaring people into avoiding a surgery that will save them years of pain and discomfort.
Myth #1: Bunions Aren’t Serious & Aren’t Covered by Insurance
Patently false.  Bunions enlarge over time and can displace the toes, resulting in conditions like hammertoes, which then also need to be treated. Waiting with bunions will worsen the condition and could lead to further complications such as hammertoes or contracted toes.  Besides causing deformity, these secondary conditions can eventually cause issues with walking and affect your knees, hip, lower back. It’s far better to treat bunions as early as possible, to avoid additional damage to the foot and ankle.  If pain is associated with the bunion, it’s covered by most insurance- check with your provider for details.

Myth #2: Bunion Surgery Is Excruciatingly Painful

Bunion surgery is not particularly “more” painful than other surgeries. Foot surgery, in general, can lend itself to increased pain post-operatively because the foot is below the level of the heart and blood can rush to the area, causing a throbbing feeling- this is why when your foot or ankle are injured, you’re recommended to elevate your foot & leg. At Dr. Weinert’s practice, tourniquets and ankle cuffs are avoided when possible, speeding recovery and avoiding issues like deep vein thrombosis and nerve damage from the vice-like wrapping used by other practices. Dr. Weinert’s patients find that the postoperative discomfort is tolerable with pain medication and a program dedicated to pain relief.

Myth #3: Bunion Surgery = Cast and Crutches

While this was true years ago, more modern techniques have allowed surgeons to mobilize patients quicker. At Dr. Weinert’s practice, he uses a minimally invasive procedure, making 2 small incisions (5mm) to complete the bunion surgery.  Because the surgery is so minimally invasive, casting and crutches are unnecessary.

The feet above are Oprah’s! Even a big name celebrities have bought into the myths surrounding bunion surgery; in this picture, Dr. Oz explains why the bunion is painful and surgical options she can take.

Myth #4: Bunion Surgery Requires Lengthy Recovery Time

Years ago, recovery from bunion surgery could take many months and required the patient be completely off their feet.  With minimally invasive procedures, patients can walk immediately after the surgery. Jobs that require excessive walking, standing and physical activity may require a medical leave of absence, and much of that depends on how severe the bunions were before surgery- all the more reason to seek treatment as soon as possible!

Myth #5: Healing After Bunion Surgery Results In Unsightly Scars

Because Dr. Weinert uses a minimally invasive approach to bunion surgery, patients are left virtually scar free.
